Title: Data Management Technician

Location: Boulder, CO – Physical Systems Laboratory (PSL)

Terms: Full-Time | Hybrid

Description

The Physical Sciences Laboratory (PSL) is part of the Earth System Research Laboratories (ESRL). PSL conducts research to improve observations, understanding, modeling, and predictions of weather, water and climate extremes, and their related impacts.  The Data Management Specialist will help our Federal client organize scientific research data holdings into a unified and consistent whole across multiple teams within the client organization. The incumbent will provide a single point of contact for data management. This is a client-facing role.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a liaison between all research teams within the client organization to understand their data set holdings and organizational needs.
  • In cooperation with the client’s Web & Data Management Team, develop consistent organizational principles and schemas for modeling and observation data.
  • Ensure adherence to Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reuse (FAIR) principles.
  • Organize and maintain metadata for all modeling and observational data holdings.
  • In cooperation with Storage managers, physically organize data holdings to increase accessibility and minimize network traffic and storage redundancy.
  • Coordinate the creation of Digital Object Identifiers (DOI) with external organizations and assist in the publication of research datasets to the appropriate scientific communities.
  • Assist in developing and enforcing data formatting best practices and standards.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Minimum Education: BS/BA degree (Computer Science, Engineering, or 6+ years of equivalent work experience)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Experience working with large datasets; meteorological, climatological, or oceanographic dataset experience preferred.
  • Expertise in tools for navigating very large datasets (>10s of TB)
  • Experience developing and maintaining metadata for geophysical datasets.
  • Experience creating DOIs and publishing datasets for other organizations’ use.
  • Good communication and organizational skills are essential.

Other Desired Experience:

  • Prior federal experience working at NOAA
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to interface professionally with other government personnel
Salary Range: $110K-$120K
